THE BEGINNING......
9 Doors Ltd started out more than 10 years ago as a small home based business, catering to mostly local and regional customers in the Berkshire area in England. At that time, JJ, the Founder of B&G Lifecasting, was looking for a keepsake for her baby son. Growing up in the UK, she was surrounded by many beautiful art pieces and sculptures. She had been captivated by the amount of details that sculpturing could capture but was never allowed to pursue her passion as courses in sculpturing cost a lot of money back then, not to mention the perception of a bleak economic prospect of a pursuit in the arts. She thought that it would make an excellent keepsake if she could capture her son’s hands and feet in a sculpture. Trained as an engineer, JJ started experimenting with materials and found that she could make Lifecastings of her son’s hands and feet relatively well. Due to advances in material sciences, such ingredients for making the lifecastings are also much safer for babies than they used to be. JJ started to offer her services to other like-minded mothers and that was the beginning of B&G. The company, which was initially called For Boys & Girls, rebranded itself as B&G 2010 UK later. From a room in her house initially, JJ soon needed more space for the business and moved her workshop into her garage. Her focus has always been on the quality of her work and she had an eye for details which gave an edge over other products. Very soon with more mothers seeking her services she had to build an outhouse in her garden to house all her creations and stocks. That space, too, became too small in no time and the company had to move its operations into a 2000 sq ft workshop space in southern London. B&G had early on secured a concession at Daniel’s Department store, the largest and oldest family owned independent store in Windsor and holder of a Royal Warrant from Her Majesty the Queen. Daniel Stores is renowned for their quality and service and being invited to be part of the store is testimony to the quality of B&G’s products. 2 more concessions soon followed – 1 in Bentalls in Kingston, London, and another in Williams and Griffin Store in Colchester. Both stores belong to the Fenwick chain of departmental stores with 12 stores nationwide. Customers also started to ask B&G to visit them in hospitals and their homes to mould their babies’ hands and feet soon after birth. As a result, B&G services were also found in various hospitals around the London and Berkshire areas (MayDay University Hospital, Royal Berkshire Hospital and Frimley Park Hospital). B&G soon became a household name in quality Lifecasting keepsakes for babies and toddlers. Others soon hear about the B&G brand and the quality it stands for. Mini franchises were established with a few selected interested parties for their own home-based businesses around the London area and beyond. These are in Basingstoke Birmingham Bracknell Cobham Colchester Croydon Maidenhead Purley Reading Staines Wimbledon Windsor Wokingham Apart from commercial companies, B&G also worked with charity groups like the NCT Trust. NCT is UK’s largest childbirth and parenting charity. Besides information on pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and parenthood, they are a strong advocate for breastfeeding, and natural child birth and development. In 2013 when her husband had to move back to Singapore, JJ established the Singapore chapter of the B&G story. THE SINGAPORE CONNECTION... In Singapore, B&G quickly established a partnership with one of the premiere private maternity hospitals in the region – Thomson Medical Centre, a BSI accredited hospital. Thomson has engaged B&G to provide a gift for ALL mothers who have given birth in the hospital for the Chinese Year of The Horse, with an estimated quantity of 10,000 gifts. With Thomson, we are able to enter the wards and offer our products and services to all mothers who have just given birth, thus capturing the baby’s hands and feet at the earliest instance. Besides Thomson Medical, B&G services are also offered at the following hospitals in Singapore: KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (the largest medical facility in Singapore, specialising in obstetrics, gynaecology, neonatology and paediatrics. It is also the only integrated women’s and children’s hospital in Singapore.), Mount Alvernia Hospital Mount Elizabeth Hospital (Orchard Road branch and Novena Branch) Gleneagles Hospital National University of Singapore Hospital At these hospitals, customers call our hotline and we are able to dispatch our moulding specialist to them usually within 1 day. B&G uses only natural materials in taking the moulds of the hands and feet. Our hypoallergenic moulding material is extracted from seaweed and even hydrates the skin during the moulding process. B&G’s moulding powder, which is imported only from original European sources, has been tested by Singapore Test Services to conform to Spring Singapore’s Consumer Goods Safety Regulations (CGSR). This material is also certified to the European Standard EU2156 and International Standard ISO1563. FOCUS ON QUALITY & UNIQUE DESIGN.....
